What is the first step you take when you or anyone in your family gets dehydration or diarrhoea? You take an ORS.
ORS or Oral Rehydrating Salts is an effective way to fight against dehydration, diarrhoea or other deadly diseases. If a person is suffering from weakness or continuous vomiting, an immediate aid of ORS is given to restore the amount of water and electrolytes in the body. Electrolytes are nothing but the mixture of bicarbonates, sodium, potassium and other important salts required by the body for its proper functioning. Therefore ORS is the mixture of water of essential salts given to a person when he/she suffers from a disease like diarrhoea.
ORS can be easily available at any medical store in powder form. To make the ORS solution:
- Empty the contents of the packet in a clear container or a glass.
- Add clean water to the container too. Add the water in the quantity mentioned in the packet. Less amount of water can be injurious.
- Stir the mixture and drink.
Note: ORS is to be made only with the use of water. No other solvent should be used such as milk, juice etc. Use only clean water.
ORS can be used by anyone suffering from diarrhoea be it, children or adults. ORS is a rehydration salt and anyone who is suffering or feeling dehydrated can have ORS. It is indeed safe for everyone.
If ORS is not available at nearby stores or at the time of emergency, then a person can also make ORS at home. It’s quite easy to prepare the ORS solution. To prepare ORS, one needs to:
- Take a litre of the bottle.
- Add 6 teaspoons of sugar.
- Add half a teaspoon of water.
- Stir the solution till the sugar dissolves.
Give the solution to the patient immediately. This is a way a person can prepare the ORS at home. Additionally, an ORS should not be kept for more than 24 hours as it has a risk of bacterial contamination.
ORS is termed the most important and cost-effective treatment. So, we celebrate World’s ORS Day to acknowledge this cost-effective treatment. World ORS Day is celebrated every year on 29th July.
